When it comes to gaming storage, few brands command as much respect as WD_Black. Many legendary SSDs have flown under this banner, including the subject of today’s deal: SN7100. This drive is an excellent example of PCIe Gen 4 storage and there’s never been a better time to buy it.
On Amazon US, every capacity of WD_Black SN7100 has fallen to its lowest ever price. Starting from $69.99 for the 1TB model, you can actually save a further $3.50 through an optional coupon available via the drive’s product page.
However, I’d recommend going for WD_Black SN7100 with 2TB of capacity. Not only will this SSD provide more space than the 1TB alternative, it’s also better value at $60 per terabyte. Sweetening the deal further, you can save a further $6 on the $119.99 promotional price via coupon.
The 4TB variant actually offers the best capacity per dollar, at $209.99 ($52.50 per TB), but I can understand not wanting to splash so much cash on storage. Unfortunately, there’s no coupon you can activate to further drive down the price of this SSD.
Outfitting your system with WD_Black SN7100, will grant you sequential read speeds of up to 7,250MB/s (7000MB/s on 4TB) and sequential writes of 6,900MB/s (6,700MB/s on 4TB). This kind of performance pushes the PCI Gen 4 interface about as far as technically possible, ensuring zippy load times and game installs.
This SSD arrives without heatsink, and doesn’t explicitly require one either. However, to get the most consistent performance out of WD_Black SN7100, I’d recommend running under a passive heatsink or grabbing an aftermarket solution. The latter is a must if you plan to use the drive in your PlayStation 5.
Sandisk rates the endurance of WD_Black SN7100 at 600TBW per TB of capacity. In the case of the 2TB model I recommend, you’d need to write 1,200TB of data to the SSD to hit this target, which is the equivalent of installing Cyberpunk 2077 more than 1,400 times. Of course, the SSD comes with a warranty too that lasts five years.
Installing WD_BLACK Dashboard will help you squeeze additional performance out of the SSD via ‘Game Mode’. Welcome as this feature is for gaming-oriented storage, I personally find the drive health monitoring features and firmware update portal more useful.
