PCIe Gen 5 storage has come a long way since its advent, growing more efficient and speedy, and MSI is welcomingly adding to its Spatium SSD line with a new drive that exemplifies these qualities. The brand’s also launching a faster version of its portable Datamag SSD, doubling the speed of the original model.
Spatium M571 DLP

The Spatium M571 DLP is MSI’s new flagship M.2 2280 SSD, which makes great use of its Gen 5 interface with respective sequential read and write speeds of 14,00MB/s and 11,000MB/s. This level of performance places the drive a welcome 26-36% ahead of the brand’s previous effort, the Spatium M560.
Under the hood, a 6nm TSMC controller keeps the Spatium M571 DLP running efficiently. MSI claims this chip reduces power consumption by “up to 50%” but doesn’t reveal what it’s comparing against. In any case, the drive doesn’t come with an elaborate cooler, á la the Spatium M580 or M570, and should play just fine underneath a motherboard heatsink.
Separating the Spatium M571 DLP its kin pack is MSI’s new Data Loss Protection (DLP) technology. While the brand hasn’t shared the particulars of how this feature works, it claims it will protect “critical data” in the event of an unexpected power loss. Having been through the headache of recovering data from a corrupt drive once before following a power outage, I certainly appreciate the promise of this tech.
The drive will be available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities, but we don’t yet know if performance will differ slightly across sizes. Nonetheless, all models will come with a five-year warranty. MSI is yet to reveal pricing for the Spatium M571 DLP.
Datamag 40Gbps

Next up, there’s the Datamag 40Gbps. This is the successor to the portable SSD I looked at in my Datamag 20Gbps review, retaining much of the same design but boasting higher speeds. More specifically, this puck is capable of sequential read and write performance of 4,00MB/s and 3,600MB/s, respectively.
For those unfamiliar with MSI’s Datamag series, here’s a quick briefer on what makes them so enticing as portable storage. These drives are so small, and light enough at 85g, that they can attach to the back of your phone, either through their built-in magnets or via strips that MSI includes at no extra charge.
You can plug the Datamag 40Gbps into any device with a USB-C port, providing you’ve set them up with a compatible file system. However, you’ll need to connect the drive to a USB 4 port to get the most out of its speed. Connecting to anything older and the SSD will downscale its speed relative to available bandwidth.
Datamag 40Gbps will be available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. MSI is yet to reveal pricing.
