PCIe Gen 5 SSDs have been around for years, but were both expensive and difficult to cool upon their debut. However, following the arrival of drives like Samsung 9100 Pro, such speedy storage doesn’t require such extravagant cooling nor carry such a large cost. Just look now, you can pick up the aforementioned drive in a variety of capacities, all at their lowest ever price.

“A class-leading SSD.” Read our review.
On Amazon US, you’ll find Samsung 9100 Pro complete with heatsink starting at $164.99, down 25% ($55) for 1TB of capacity. If you fancy something larger, you can pick up 2TB for $189.99, saving 27% ($70), meanwhile 4TB will cost you $349.99 with a 26% ($120) discount.
Personally, I feel that the 2TB model on account of it offering the steepest discount, being much cheaper than the 4TB alternative, and better bang for buck than the 1TB variant. As a reminder, though, whichever capacity you opt for you’ll be paying the lowest ever price.
In my Samsung 9100 Pro review, I rightly found the SSD’s speed to be impressive. This drive offers sequential read speeds of up to 14,700MB/s, with sequential writes not far behind at 13,400MB/s on 2TB and 4TB models (13,300MB/s on 1TB). This is about as fast as consumer storage gets.
Though 9100 Pro is a trailblazer, it doesn’t need a huge amount of juice to maintain class-leading performance levels. The SSD’s maximum power consumption ranges between 7.6-9.0W depending on capacity. Such efficiency begets better thermals, with temperatures peaking at just 61°C in my testing.
You needn’t worry about longevity either, as Samsung rates drive endurance at 600TBW per TB of capacity. As ever, you’d need to hit the drive unusually hard to hit that metric. More importantly, 9100 Pro comes with a five-year limited warranty.
Note, you will need an M.2 slot with a PCIe Gen 5 interface to run 9100 Pro at the drive’s highest possible speeds. While the SSD will work in older slots, you’ll only net half the possible throughput in a PCIe Gen 4 slot. If you’re unsure if you have a motherboard ready to receive the drive, consult your manual or product page for specifications.
