Quality M.2 SSDs can’t get any cheaper, can they? Never say never as Samsung’s venerable 1TB 980 SSD has been treated to another hefty price cut and is now available for $45 in the US and £40 in the UK.

While not the quickest drive by today’s lofty standards, Samsung’s 980 remains a tried-and-trusted solution that hits speeds of up to 3,500MB/s on a PCIe 3.0 interface. A welcome upgrade over an older SATA solution, and you also have warranty cover of five years or 600 TBW from one of the biggest names in the business.

An SSD that does what it says on the tin, yet it is the lowest-ever price that really draws attention. Samsung’s drive has dropped from £95 to £40 in the space of 12 months, representing a near-60 per cent reduction. Putting that figure into perspective, I went for a pub meal the other day that cost more and didn’t taste as satisfying as a 1TB SSD!
