Kingston launches 8TB capacity variant of its blazing-fast Fury Renegade G5 SSD

A high-capacity, high-performance SSD for those who want a set-and-forget storage solution to cover their needs for years to come.

Kingston has unleashed its largest Fury Renegade G5 NVMe SSD for enthusiasts and professionals, boasting 8TB of storage capacity. Powered by a PCIe 5.0 x4 interface, this M.2 drive can reach a sequential read speed of up to 14,800MB/s, which is near the limit of what is currently possible on consumer hardware. If you are looking for the ultimate storage system, this drive is among the fastest out there.

Given its capabilities, any drastic speed bump will require new drives based on the upcoming PCIe 6.0 interface, as PCIe 5.0 x4 is theoretically limited to 15.7GB/s. Raw speed aside, the Renegade G5 is also rated for 2,200,000 read and write IOPS, indicating great handling of small files and loading times. As for endurance, the brand advertises 8,000TB of total bytes written.

To increase the storage capacity of this drive while keeping the same 2280 M.2 format as the rest of the lineup, Kingston opted for a double-sided approach where chips are located both on the top and bottom of its 12-layer PCB. These include the Silicon Motion SM2508 controller, LPDDR4 caching RAM, and the 3D TLC NAND flash memory. This shouldn’t be an issue for most users, but it’s possibly a concern for thin laptops and gaming handhelds. Most importantly, thanks to its 6nm controller manufacturing node, the drive shouldn’t run hot, while Kingston says it draws just 9.5W under maximum load.

Its large capacity and outstanding performance make it ideal for demanding tasks such as high-resolution video editing, 3D rendering, and database acceleration/caching. Gaming and general PC usage, on the other hand, won’t see much gains from this SSD, since this level of performance is rarely needed by these tasks. However, if you stream and record your games while playing on the same machine, the Renegade G5 may be of help.

The Fury Renegade G5 SSD is available for an eye-watering price of £1,062 on Amazon UK, backed by a five-year warranty, putting it slightly higher than competing products such as the Samsung 9100 Pro 8TB. Fortunately, this kind of performance and storage density isn’t required by most apps and games, meaning that your daily tasks can be more than satisfied by more affordable options such as the KC3000. Though, of course, if you need it, the option is here.
