The days of super-cheap PC storage are coming to an end. Industry sources point to a price hike surpassing 55%, driven by heightened demand in the face of constricted supply. You can forget about a 2TB drive for £70 / $70 for the foreseeable future.

It’s time to act quickly as storage bargains are becoming thinner on the ground. That’s not to say they don’t exist, and after scouring the virtual shelves of Amazon on your behalf, we’ve found one of few remaining bargains.

The 4TB Crucial X9 Portable SSD is currently available for $210 across the pond, representing a steep 25% discount on the RRP. What’s more, it’s the lowest price for a long time, underscoring great value. A UK price of £204 isn’t the best we’ve ever seen, but still represents a welcome decline from highs of nearly £260 just a week or so ago.

Connecting via ubiquitous USB-C, the 4TB model is the largest in the arsenal. Enough, I would say, to offer an excellent media repository or great for moving large files between PCs. Speaking of which, the 1,050MB/s connection is quick enough to shift upwards of 60GB in a minute.

TLC NAND

Moreover, looking deeper into the specifications, the Crucial X9 uses tried-and-trusted TLC NAND flash within the robust and pocketable exterior. Other ostensibly similar external drives use cheaper and less reliable QLC NAND, so there’s a real benefit straight off the bat. I still use the 2TB X8 predecessor to this day. It’s a fine drive that does exactly what it says on the tin. The X9 is better, however, because of that lovely TLC memory. It’s tiny, too, at just 65mm x 60mm, and promises drop protection from a height of 7.5ft.

Furthermore, Crucial backs it up with a three-year warranty. Going by my personal experience over 20 years, the company’s returns service is also first class.

Big in capacity and backed by a well-known name in the storage industry, the 4TB Crucial X9 external SSD is about as good a stocking-filler as you’re going to get.
