That means this CPU’s price is now a massive 40% below the original launch MSRP of £449.99. Of course, it’s been a while since this CPU retailed for that much money, seeing as it’s since been usurped by the 9800X3D and 9850X3D. However, £269.99 is still the lowest ever price for this CPU on Amazon, according to price trackers. In fact, it now has the same price as the new lower-spec 7700X3D on Amazon, despite the latter being given a £20 discount since launch.
The big draw of the 7800X3D, of course, is its cache. There’s an extra 64MB of L3 cache stacked on top of its 8-core chiplet, giving it a colossal total of 96MB. This has a big impact on gaming performance, as it substantially reduces the likelihood of a cache miss and the need for your CPU to page your slower system memory for data. This means it can focus on the job in hand – maintaining frame rates.
The downside, in the case of the 7800X3D, is that it only has a 5GHz boost clock, which was a key criticism of this chip in our original review, especially at its £449 launch MSRP. However, that’s a moot point when the price is just £269.99, especially when the 7700X3D costs the same amount and only boosts to 4.5GHz. If you want more clock speed, it’s also worth checking out this Ryzen 7 9850X3D deal for £339.99, but the 7800X3D is still a very fast gaming CPU, thanks to all that cache.
Amazon is listing this 7800X3D offer as a limited-time deal, so I recommend getting in sooner rather than later if you want to pick one up. The main downer, of course, is that you’ll need DDR5 memory for it, which is very expensive right now. That’s fine if you’re looking to upgrade from an old Intel 12th-gen DDR5 system, or if you’re only using a Ryzen 5 7600 at the moment, but it’s a tough ask if you only own DDR4 system.
That said, any price savings are very welcome in these bleak times. If you’re looking to build an X3D gaming rig, but you’re on a tight budget, this 7800X3D deal will definitely help you save a bit of money, helping to cushion the blow of DDR5 prices a little.
