Shiny and enticing as newer processors are, chips from just a generation or two ago are still worth a look. Case in point, Core i9-14900K, a former ruler of the roost who just became a bargain chip through a recent and surprisingly steep discount.

On Amazon US, you’ll find Core i9-14900K on the proverbial shelf for a staggeringly-low $336. That’s 23% ($103) below the processor’s typical cost, and marks the lowest ever price for the chip on the storefront. I can’t stress just how remarkable this discount is, beating the previous best by a welcome $52.
Despite Core i9-14900K’s age, the processor still has plentiful performance to offer in more-modern times. In fact, I’d argue it’s a far-better value CPU relative to Core Ultra 9 285K, which currently stands at $520 while only providing a meagre uplift across all workloads.
Take the Cinebench 2024 single-core and multi-core results from our versus guide. Core i9-14900K is 6-12% behind Core Ultra 9 285K, but costs 35% less.
Then there’s gaming, where Core i9-14900K can actually beat Core Ultra 9 285K in some titles. Even when the tables turn, Intel’s older flagship isn’t far behind.
In our testing, Core i9-14900K took the crown in games such as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Cyberpunk 2077, and Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail.
While Core i9-14900K offers greater performance-per-dollar, the processor’s LGA1700 platform is also far more affordable. Although, new Z890 is becoming harder to find as time passes, so you’ll want to act fast.
If Core i9-14900K seems like a great fit for your system, just make sure you’re up for contending with the processor’s power consumption and thermals. This chip guzzles watts and runs hot, requiring robust cooling.
