Logitech hopes to transform the humble mouse using haptic tech

Latest-generation MX Master 4 adds haptics for additional precision in productivity tasks.

The Logitech brand has a very long history with the PC mouse, introducing its first hardware pointer at the Comdex trade show way back in 1982. Since then, the mouse has become a universal tool for PC usage, but also the sort of thing that most people don’t really think too hard about unless it breaks. Logitech’s latest mouse aims to shake things up a bit – literally.

The new Logitech MX Master 4 is adding haptic feedback technology to the mix which provides the user with what are described as ‘subtle variations’ for different tasks including scrolling, navigation and selection. This is said to assist with the level of precision needed for work such as video editing, data analysis and design tasks.

Another feature being added to this new mouse is the Actions Ring. This is an overlay available via the Logi Options+ app, which can provide customisation options for various programs. For example, the ability to assign certain Photoshop functions or Excel macros to mouse shortcuts to improve workflow.

Though not directly mentioned by Logitech, this technology could potentially be of great benefit to users with vision problems, since the haptic feedback could provide a helpful guide when navigating through a given application, with the vibrations nudging the user towards the correct options, or providing a quick way to access certain functions, tools or applications.

In terms of specifications, the MX Master 4 has an 8,000 DPI sensor for accurate tracking on the majority of surfaces, including glass, as well as a ‘MagSpeed’ scroll wheel that can scroll up to 1,000 lines per second. The click sensors have been tweaked to be quieter but just as accurate compared to its predecessor, and the mouse can be paired with up to three devices simultaneously for those who need to regularly switch systems.

Users of the MX Master 4 will also be able to enjoy USB-C quick charging, with only one minute of charging providing three hours of use, and a full charge lasting a whopping 70 days. The newly designed USB-C dongle lets the mouse be easily paired across different devices such as laptops, tablets or desktops. An improved chip and optimised antenna ensures the connectivity remains stable and consistent.

Customers worldwide will be able to choose from Graphite or Pale Grey colourways, with Black and Graphite Charcoal as additional options in North American and Europe. Apple users will be able to select White Silver or Space Black for use on their Mac.

This mouse does not come cheap at £119.99/€129.99, but the price does include a one-month subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud suite. Further information can be found on the Logitech website.
