SteamGPT, a Valve AI service, may soon handle your Steam support queries

In addition to providing support ticket assistance, SteamGPT looks as though it will also have a role to play in shaping Counter-Strike 2.

Lurking in the code of recent Steam updates are references to a new ‘SteamGPT’ feature, which appears to use artificial intelligence to handle customer support tickets. In addition to that primary responsibility, it seems Valve also has plans for the presumed chatbot relating to Counter-Strike 2.

Following the discovery of a Steam Framerate Estimator, Valve content creator gabefollower has shared screenshots of code pertaining to SteamGPT in an X post. The lines contain references to generic task creation and response, but also include the use of Valve’s Trust Score system.

For those out of the loop, Trust Score refers to the value that powers Valve’s patented Trust Factor Matchmaking, with which Counter-Strike 2 players are readily familiar. In short, this system uses machine learning to analyse and score players based on their behaviour in matches, and pairs them with teammates and enemies of similar trustworthiness. Think of it like skill-based matchmaking (SBM) but for sportsmanship.

SteamGPT’s code doesn’t give us any meaningful indication as to how it will function in relation to customer support or Counter-Strike 2, only that it has access to variables relevant to both. I just hope this feature doesn’t negatively impact the quality of Steam’s generally stellar customer support, let alone affect the jobs of the people who created that reputation in the first place.

While there remains a chance that SteamGPT never sees the light of day, such an outcome seems unlikely given Valve president Gabe Newell’s perspective on artificial intelligence. Last year, Newell said, “AI is essentially going to be a cheat code for people who want to take advantage of it.” It stands to reason that this same philosophy applies to his own company too.

All that said, I do see the value in using automation to speed up customer support. Valve is only several hundred strong in terms of staff, with Steam serving millions of gamers every single day. I have some faith that the company won’t crowbar (pun intended) in artificial intelligence unnecessarily, as no one wants to see SteamGPT evoke feelings reminiscent of Wheatley or GLaDOS. Here’s hoping that proverbial morality core remains intact.
