Black Friday is inching closer but you don’t need to wait for the sales bonanza to score a great deal on a gaming monitor. Case in point, I’ve found an Asus TUF gaming monitor that’s sure to please esports enthusiasts with its 310Hz refresh rate. Better still, there’s never been a better time to pick up this screen as its price has tumbled to a new all-time low.

Steadfast durability, immersive gaming.” – Asus

On Amazon US, TUF Gaming VG259QL5A is available for just $149. That’s 25% ($50) off the monitor’s list pricing and, to reiterate, the best ever price for this model. You’ll find it difficult to find a display of similar calibre at this price, but allow me to tell you more about this butter-smooth screen.

This budget offering packs a welcome punch, featuring a fast IPS panel with a 1080p resolution and lofty 310Hz overclocked refresh rate. This specification combo is ideal for esports games, but the monitor will shape up nicely for more cinematic experiences too. You can expect solidly sharp images on this display to boot, with 1920×1080 providing a 92PPI pixel density across the 24in panel.

Outside of pricier OLED and Mini LED options, IPS remains my panel technology of choice. This type of screen offers the best levels of brightness as well as typically wider colour gamut coverage. Their response times are also faster than VA alternatives, and they’re not far off the pace of TN displays. If you’re the kind of person who needs a monitor capable of handling competitive and single player games, I don’t believe there’s a better backlit alternative, particularly at this price.

What’s the benefit of the IPS panel over the VA panels that are usually at this price? We can say that our tests show IPS panels are better at dealing with fast motion with less ghosting. Add that in with active sync and ELMB, and you’ve got a monitor that’s great for displaying fast action smoothly. We can mention the sorts of games that will benefit from this.

Fluidity really is the name of the game with TUF Gaming VG259QL5A. The screen is compatible with both AMD FreeSync Premium and Nvidia G-Sync, keeping frame tearing at bay. Meanwhile, Asus ELMB Sync uses backlight strobing to reduce ghosting and motion blur.

In terms of colour credentials, Asus claims that this panel covers 99% of the sRGB gamut making the monitor ideal for SDR content. The screen does boast VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification, but I’d stray way from HDR on this display, as it doesn’t have any local dimming.

Asus outfits TUF Gaming VG259QL5A with two HDMI 2.0 ports and a single DisplayPort 1.4 input. Either option is capable of running the monitor at its highest resolution and refresh rate. However, DP makes the most sense for PC, as that frees up the two HDMI ports for other devices like consoles, laptops, etc.

Finally, it’s easy to setup the monitor for comfortable viewing. You can tilt, swivel, and pivot the screen as well as adjust its height using the stock stand. Alternatively, you can shift to a VESA mount if you’d prefer.
