“The conqueror of frame rates is here. All hail the new gaming champ.”Read our review.

This time last year, AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D prices went through the roof, as supply was unable to meet gamers’ insatiable demand for this chip. You only need to read our 9800X3D review to see why. With a 64MB slice of 3D V-cache sitting under its eight-core chiplet, this CPU has a huge 96MB total of L3 cache.

This substantially reduces the chance of cache misses and the need to page system memory, enabling the CPU to focus on maintaining frame rates. Just take a look at our Cyberpunk 2077 and Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail results below to see how this affects gaming. In the former, the 9800X3D’s 163fps average is a massive 42fps quicker than Intel’s Core Ultra 9 285K, while its extra 200MHz of clock speed gives it an edge over the 7800X3D.

It’s not just the best CPU right now for gaming, but we even consider it one of the top 10 CPUs ever, with AMD nailing the X3D formula with this chip. With its cache mounted under the cores, rather than on top of them, it also has more thermal headroom than the 7800X3D and runs cooler. You can even overclock it, with a 5.4GHz frequency easily achievable using AMD’s Ryzen Master software if you have a good enough CPU cooler.

Thanks to its use of AMD’s new Zen 5 architecture, as well as its higher clock speed, the 9800X3D is also a better multi-threading chip than its predecessor, the acclaimed 7800X3D. At £389.99, it’s still not cheap for an 8-core CPU, but that cache really does make all the difference when it comes to gaming performance. Get one quick before the price goes back up again.
