QNAP has announced its TVS-hx77AX enterprise hybrid ZFS NAS series, aimed at businesses and professionals handling large datasets. Powered by a 6-core AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 7645 CPU, this series combines the high capacity of SATA SSDs with the fast speeds of U.2 NVMe SSDs.
The TVS-hx77AX series includes three models: the 16-bay TVS-h1677AX, 12-bay TVS-h1277AX, and 8-bay TVS-h877AX. The smallest and lowest-cost model, the TVS-h877AX, offers bays for six SATA 6Gbps disks and two U.2 drives. The TVS-h1277AX expands that a bit, offering bays for eight SATA 6Gbps disks and four U.2 SSDs, with the TVS-h1677AX boasting the largest set, offering room for 12 SATA 6Gbps hard drives and four U.2 SSDs.
Note, however, that while the SATA speed remains identical between models, the U.2 slots run at PCIe 4.0 x4 on the TVS-h877AX, and PCIe 4.0 x2 on the TVS-h1277AX and TVS-h1677AX.
The TVS-hx77AX series combines its hard drives and SSDs in a hybrid architecture to boost random IOPS and transfer speeds, leaving the system to automatically tier hot data to SSDs and cold data to high-capacity HDDs.
This optimisation is said to improve access times without requiring an all-flash storage system. Additionally, QNAP says the ZFS-based QuTS hero operating system offers self-healing capabilities and immutable snapshots, which serve as a critical defence against ransomware while ensuring data integrity.
All systems ship with 16GB of DDR5 RAM, which can be expanded up to 192GB using the four available DIMM slots, and are compatible with ECC memory. All models also come equipped with two 2.5Gb plus two 10Gb LAN ports, alongside three PCIe 4.0 slots. The latter allow you to augment the networking speed using dual 25GbE SmartNICs, such as QNAP’s QXG-25G2SF-BCM.
Note, however, that installing an add-on card in the second slot will reduce the primary slot speed from x8 down to x4, making all three slots run at Gen 4 x4 speed. The rest of the I/O setup includes two USB 3.2 10Gbps Type-C ports, two USB 2.0 Type-A sockets, plus one HDMI 1.4b output.
QNAP claims the TVS-hx77AX series’ combination of high-speed networking and fast hybrid storage can effortlessly handle concurrent virtual machines (VMs), containerised application development, and high-throughput data decompression workloads. To put it simply, if you need massive data pipelines, this may be the NAS you need.
The QNAP TVS-hx77AX enterprise hybrid ZFS NAS series starts at $3,049 for the TVS-h877AX, going up to $3,449 for the TVS-h1277AX and $3,999 for a QNAP TVS-h1677AX. All the devices are backed by a five-year warranty.
