MSI BIOS update includes support for a “future” AMD CPU

Future CPU? Is MSI hinting at the launch of Ryzen 9000G Series?

MSI has published BIOS version 7E59v2A73 for its 800-series AM5 motherboards, based on AMD’s AGESA 1.2.0.3e microcode. The update brings support for a non-descript future AMD CPU, optimisations for 256GB DDR5 kits, and memory overclocking improvements.

Eagle-eyed X user g01d3nm4ng0 brought these changes to our attention. Looking at the amendments in more detail, they include support for 4x64GB (256GB) DDR5 kits, optimisations for 2DPC 1R (2 DIMMs Per Channel Single Rank) memory configurations, overclocking optimisations for Samsung memory chips, and of course, “support [for] future CPU.”

The 2DPC topology puts two modules on the same channel to double the RAM capacity on quad-DIMM motherboards. That said, this advantage comes at the cost of lower speeds or higher latencies as the motherboard’s electrical paths and the CPU’s integrated controller deal with the additional load. The 1R (single Rank) modules try to somewhat alleviate these limitations by using all modules simultaneously through rank interleaving.

MSI BIOS update.

With memory talk aside, the question of the hour is what is this “future CPU”? The introduction of a single processor to the Ryzen stack seems unlikely, so we’re more than likely looking at changes made in support of at least several chips. Zen 6 shouldn’t hit the market for at least a year but the prospect of an imminent Ryzen 9000G Series launch isn’t out of the question.

At the time of writing, MAG X870 Tomahawk seems to be the only motherboard to receive this update. However, it shouldn’t be long before MSI spreads the love to other models.
