Ryzen AI 400 Series APUs are familiar but hide a budget surprise

AMD is reintroducing a Ryzen 3 SKU to its mobile lineup after a prolonged absence.

AMD has seemingly begun shifting its upcoming Gorgon Point APUs across the globe, expected to launch next year. These new chips have appeared in shipping manifests, not bearing any product family descriptors. However, these processors should form the Ryzen AI 400 Series family, effectively a refresh of Ryzen AI 300 Series offerings.

Details on Gorgon Point processors leaked during an AMD presentation for Chinese laptop manufacturers, including their specifications. These new would-be Ryzen AI 400 Series chips will be broadly similar to their 300 Series predecessors.

The range includes at least seven models, including Ryzen 9, 7, and 5 SKUs. Surprisingly, Gorgoin Point will see the return of a Ryzen 3 model too, complete with four cores, eight threads, and a maximum clock speed of 4.6GHz. This budget tier was absent from Ryzen AI 300 Series, so its return pleases me.

Despite sporting a new codename, Gorgon Point (Ryzen AI 400 Series) won’t be a radical shift in design. Based on current leaks, SKUs will be similar to existing Ryzen AI 300 Series processors albeit with higher clock speeds and superior AI performance. Under the hood, this is the same combination of Zen 5 and Zen 5c cores paired with RDNA 3.5 graphics, in addition XDNA 2 NPUs

As much as the world has largely moved on from quad core processors, I’d love to see a similar configuration makes its way to desktop. After all, every penny counts when you’re putting together a budget system. Perhaps Zen 6 will see Ryzen 3 SKUs return, loaded with more cores.

For the moment, Ryzen AI 400 Series will be the latest and only Ryzen 3 SKU on the market with Zen 5 cores under its belt. Expect them to find their way into laptops sometime in 2026.
