If your mouse has been acting up in games with seemingly no explanation or means to address it, the problem could have been Windows 11 all along. Thankfully, Microsoft claims to have resolved the issue, and is sharing a fix as part of the latest security update for its operating system.
Microsoft’s patch notes for KB5127648 sadly don’t go into much detail about the root cause or changes made to Windows 11 to remedy mouse stuttering. Instead, the changelog on the patch’s support page merely states that “this update fixes an issue that could cause mouse input to stutter in some games.”
Given this lack of context, we can’t know the prevalence of this particular cause of mouse stuttering, or how long it’s been going on. Regardless, this change should bring peace of mind to at least some gamers who have been pulling their hair out in trying to gain reliable control of their clicker.

Reports of prior Windows updates causing mouse stuttering have emerged over the past several years. However, none that we’ve seen have provided irrefutable causational evidence that changes to the operating system were the issue’s source.
That said, this wouldn’t be the first time Microsoft’s patches have resulted in problems, with recent Windows 11 audio bugs springing to mind. Even RGB has crashed Windows in the past.
Any number of handshaking issues between drivers, USB ports, or even intermittent sensor faults can cause the same problem. However, if you’ve swapped mice and are still experiencing stuttering, this patch could be the salvation you’ve been hoping for.
You can apply the update to your OS installation via Windows Update. The patch was readily available to my 26H2 machine (as shown above) after manually checking for updates.
