During AMD’s Computex 2025 keynote, the company teased several enhancements coming to its Radeon performance suite dubbed FSR ‘Redstone’. Promised to launch later this year, the release of these technologies could be closer than we might think following the most-recent updates to FSR.
Alexander Blake-Davies, senior software product marketing specialist for AMD Developer Programs, lays out the changes FSR 3.1.4 brings in a GPUOpen blog post. Chief among them is support for FSR Redstone technologies, which Blake-Davies assures is still on track to become available “later this year.”
For those unfamiliar with FSR Redstone, the suite consists of four technologies: Neural Radiance Caching, ML Ray Regeneration, ML Super Resolution, and ML Frame Generation. The use of AI in image upscaling is already present in FSR 4, but the other three features are a first for AMD.
These additions should help plug the gap against Nvidia DLSS 4, short of a Multi Frame Generation alternative. Ray Regeneration seems a Radeon mirror of Ray Reconstruction, and ML Frame Generation will create parity with DLSS Frame Generation 2X through the use of AI.
While Redstone features aren’t ready for prime time, Blake-Davies highlights that FSR 3.1.4 features a “signed, easily upgradable DLL that supports our FSR 4 driver upgrade feature.” This isn’t a new development, but this particular version will apparently make updates to future versions of FSR “more straightforward” and include FSR Redstone technologies.
The wording of this sentence is slightly unclear. While I know it’s possible to replace the FSR 3 super resolution pipeline with ML-based FSR 4, and I imagine the same is true of frame generation, does this also mean ML Ray Regeneration and Neural Radiance Caching are part and parcel too? The latter two don’t seem likely, but I’m more than happy for AMD to prove otherwise.
FSR Redstone technologies will be exclusive to RDNA 4 GPUs, from Radeon RX 9060 to Radeon RX 9070 XT, on account of their superior AI chops relative to older cards. However, it’s entirely possible that modders could bring the technologies over to RDNA 3, as they have with FSR 4 upscaling.
I’m curious to see how the full FSR Redstone suite compares to DLSS 4. Here’s hoping AMD can work with developers at a much faster pace than it is currently, waiting weeks for a driver to enable features in my game, á la Cyberpunk 2077 and FSR 4, isn’t a great look.
