Commodore has just released a Cyberpunk 2077-themed version of its C64U computer, making the classic 80s ‘breadbin’ look like a futuristic hacking machine from Night City. Unveiled at Gamescom, the aptly named Commodore 77 not only has a scratched-up paint job inspired by CD Projekt Red’s game, but also has a bunch of Cyberpunk software features.
These include a 2MB data cartridge, presented in the style of an Arasaka data shard from Cyberpunk 2077. Load it up, and you’ll get a cyberpunk-style demo, featuring a 24-channel, stereo SID soundtrack by chiptune maestro LukHash – all created on original Commodore 64 hardware. Even the BASIC programming interface hits you with a futuristic font and a custom ‘Commodore 77’ heading.
Meanwhile, there are loads of Cyberpunk 2077 touches to the chassis, so it looks like it’s been produced by Seocho Electronics. These include a brushed metal plate surrounding the F keys on the right, all with Cyberpunk 2077 iconography. You’ll also notice that the Return key has been renamed ‘execute’ and the ‘Inst / Del’ key now says ‘Inject Wipe’ on it, among many other nods to the genre across the keyboard.
There are numerous burn marks, scratches, and bits of graffiti in the paintwork as well, plus a series of dots above the keyboard. There are so many details here, it’s worth zooming into the pics just to absorb them all. Even the AMD Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA chip that powers the machine has been clocked to 77MHz in honour of the collaboration.
The Commodore 64 Ultimate, or C64U, was designed to bring the classic Commodore 64 machine into the modern world. With a chassis built from the original moulds and tooling used to make the original computer, it offers an authentically retro experience, including BASIC coding, but with the benefits of new tech, such as HDMI output and mass solid state storage, while maintaining compatibility with peripherals from the time.
Peri Fractic, president, CEO, and chief product officer, Commodore is really pleased with the result. “I have been a fan of the game [Cyberpunk 2077] since its release,” says Fractic, “and it was rewarding to learn in my discussions with their joint CEO, Michał Nowakowski, that he was a lifelong Commodore 64 fan in turn. For us both, this has been a collaboration where art imitates life, and in turn, life for the denizens of Night City now imitates that art. We hope they enjoy their new terminal.”
CD Projekt Red appear to be equally chuffed, with Patrick Mills, Ffranchise content strategy lead at the developer, saying, “when we signed the deal with Commodore to collaborate on the Commodore 77, I was thrilled.”
“As an old-school PC gamer myself, I can still remember when the Commodore 64 was the pinnacle of gaming tech. Commodore’s legacy wasn’t the only thing that excited me, though. The tech in Cyberpunk 2077 is chunky, tactile, and substantial — meaning that the Commodore 77 can really feel like a device lifted straight out of the game world and onto your desktop.”
The first batch of Commodore 77s have already been bought up, and are due to ship in February 2027, and at the time of writing there are 436 of 500 units from the second batch available to pre-order, which will ship in the same timeframe. Pricing sits at £276.29 ex VAT / $373.
