Gigabyte just dropped an AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro motherboard that supports 2TB of RAM

A board designed for reliable and scalable computing, with enough memory support to handle advanced local AI infrastructure.

Gigabyte has announced the WRX90 AI TOP workstation motherboard, designed to support AMD’s Threadripper Pro CPUs. Engineered for local AI workloads and intensive computing, it supports multi-GPU installations through its PCIe 5.0 expansion slots and up to 2TB of ECC memory, thanks to its eight-channel DDR5 configuration.

The Gigabyte WRX90 AI TOP’s sTR5 socket supports both Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9000-WX and Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7000-WX processors. Measuring 30.5cm x 33.0cm, it’s designed to offer a robust and extensible hardware foundation for professionals interested in deploying their own local AI models instead of relying on external cloud-hosted APIs.

Gigabyte WRX90 AI TOP - side.

To ensure seamless upgradability, Gigabyte has equipped the WRX90 AI TOP with seven Ultra Durable PCIe 5.0 x16 slots, ready to be filled with high-VRAM graphics cards, alongside two MCIO 8i connectors. The latter is a compact, high-density internal cable interface that routes four high-speeded PCI 5.0 lanes, bringing support for up to nine GPUs or expansion cards. For storage, Gigabyte went with two Gen 5 M.2 slots plus one Gen 4 M.2 connectors, with four SATA 6Gb/s sockets available if more capacity is needed.

Complementing this expansion capacity are eight DDR5 UDIMM memory slots, supporting up to 2TB of ECC RDIMM or 3D stacked RDIMM-3DS memory. On compatible CPUs, all slots can work together in eight-channel mode, ensuring enough data is fed to memory-intensive applications, such as complex AI models and physics simulations. Gigabyte also advertises support for up to 7,800MT/s speeds via EXPO profiles.

Beyond hardware support, the WRX90 AI TOP is also built with reliability and stable performance in mind, packing a whopping 32+3+3+3-phase digital power design fed via two 8-pin cables, paired with a 14-layer server-grade PCB plus a full-metal backplate.

Gigabyte says this layout ensures stable power delivery, signal integrity, and structural rigidity. Meanwhile, to tackle heat buildup, the board comes equipped with small fans on top of the VRM and chipset coolers, plus a large dual-fan setup dedicated to RAM cooling. The latter reduces average memory temperatures by up to 43°C compared to unassisted setups, according to Gigabyte.

Gigabyte IPMI remote management.

On the connection side, this board offers two USB 4 Type-C ports, six USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A connectors, a front USB 3.2 10Gbs Type-C socket, two 10GbE LAN ports, two Mini-DisplayPort outputs, and a microSD card slot. By including dual LAN ports, Gigabyte ensures high-speed data transfers to network storage arrays without requiring additional expansion cards that would waste one of the PCIe slots.

Understandably, no professional motherboard is complete without a management port. In the case of the WRX90 AI TOP, Gigabyte has equipped it with an onboard ASPEED AST2600 BMC and a dedicated IPMI LAN port, enabling IT administrators to perform remote hardware monitoring, power control, and troubleshooting from a distance.

Gigabyte hasn’t shared any pricing or availability information for this board yet, but considering the lower-tier TRX50 AI TOP already commands $899, it’s not going to be cheap.
