Intel stirs hopes of Arc B770 with confirmation of BMG-G31 GPU die

It's official, BMG-G31 exists. Perhaps Arc B770 does too?

Intel asked those in search of Arc B770 to stay tuned back in May, but the company’s been silent on the prospect of a new consumer graphics card ever since. However, it seems that something is indeed in the works behind closed doors. At the very least, a new leak outright confirms the existence of the long-rumoured BMG-G31 GPU.

The journey to Arc B770 has proven long and arduous thus far, with rumours of cancellation followed shortly after by whispers of resurrection. Now, BMG-G31, the presumed GPU destined for the graphics card, has appeared in the official MESA drivers list as outlet Videocardz highlights.

BMG-G31 is associated with several chipset IDs, potentially hinting at multiple variants of the GPU. At least one of them likely pertains to Arc B770, while the others could relate to a new Arc Pro SKU or go unused. Perhaps Intel plans to offer Arc B770 in two VRAM configurations, as it did with Arc A770, but it’s far too early to tell.

Listings for a Battlemage GPU sporting a PCIe 5.0 x16 interface emerged shortly before this amendment to the MESA drivers list. BMG-G31 seems an ideal candidate for such a configuration, eclipsing the performance and PCIe 4.0 x8 fingers of Arc B580 with its BMG-G21 GPU. This should help any potential graphics cards using the die run better on older systems, providing it has enough memory unlike Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB.

Arc B770 will presumably take explicit aim at Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB and GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, but Intel will need to move fast if it hopes to pull the rug from under AMD and Nvidia. For the moment, rumours say the Battlemage graphics card won’t hit the market until Q4 2025, which may prove too late for many buyers and do little to assist Team Blue’s woeful market share. Here’s hoping a surprise launch is imminent.
