Nvidia RTX 5090 is more popular among Steam users than all AMD RX 9000 Series GPUs

Every desktop GeForce RTX 50 Series graphics card is finding its way into more Steam PCs, while AMD struggles to manifest a noticeable presence.

The first Steam Hardware & Software Survey following the launch of Nvidia RTX 5060 and AMD RX 9060 XT has arrived, and it’s all-too clear that GeForce continues to reign supreme in terms of popularity. Not only has Team Green’s entry-level GPU made a pronounced splash on the scene, the brand’s most-powerful graphics card, RTX 5090, is now more popular than the entirety of Team Red’s current generation stack.

Of all Steam systems surveyed in June 2025, you’ll find an RTX 5060 in 0.32% of them while 0.18% are packing an RTX 5090. Meanwhile, every other RTX 50 Series desktop card increased its market share from the previous month, with RTX 5070 accounting for the largest portion at 0.95%.

Meanwhile, every AMD Radeon RX 9000 Series falls into the non-descript ‘Other’ category, meaning they power ≤0.15% of the Steam userbase. Both RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 have had the same time as RTX 5070 to accrue sales, but most gamers evidently prefer Nvidia’s offering.

This survey isn’t all doom and gloom for Radeon. Prior generation cards, RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT, respectively increased their market share by 0.11% and 0.01%. Not exactly earth-shattering gains, but AMD isn’t exactly in a position to turn away any crumb of good news. Nevermind the fact that RTX 5060 Ti managed to grow more popular to the tune of +0.19% on its lonesome.

Despite talks of record-breaking sales, it seems AMD still has plenty of work ahead of itself before it comes close to putting a dent in Nvidia’s vice grip on the graphics card market. How exactly the company escapes from this familiar territory is unclear, but moves like free performance boosts through driver updates will certainly boost goodwill among gamers.

I believe there’s still hope for Radeon RX 9060 XT and its ilk, dominance in the graphics card market is a marathon not a sprint after all. That said, I’m not sure what path AMD can or will take to change course, save for price cuts. The brand will need to think of something soon, though, as upcoming RTX 50 Super Series cards threaten to compound Nvidia’s lead.
