Once again, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3’s guns are ridiculous

What do you do when it's the guns that come under fire?

A Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Uzi held up as the player reloads ammo.

Another year, another Call of Duty, and Modern Warfare 3 doesn’t look to have changed much. For better or worse, it features the same frenetic gunplay you’d expect from the FPS game, the return of some fan favourite maps, and even slide and reload cancel is back in action.

One of the more unsurprising yet disappointing recurrences is ridiculous guns. First off, the community on Reddit is questioning the weapon designs. Upper_Bag6133 notes the AR15 grip on shotgun stock, while the replies try to play the minigame I just made up called ‘glitch or gun?’ Others note that the ACR, AN94, and G36 also don’t look quite right.

The game’s still a month away from release but don’t expect the looks of these guns to change much. Besides, with COD Next showcase revealing that Modern Warfare 3 has over 30 weapons that you can customise with regular and aftermarket attachments, plus camos that you can carry over from Modern Warfare 2, you should be able to find something you like in the mix.

There’s no masking gun names, however, and people aren’t fans of those, either. StarsCanScream says “these names are atrocious,” and at least 487 upvotes agree. They don’t go into more detail as to which ones they’re criticising. Our guess is that it could be the BAS-B, WSP Swarm, MGOL136, or a combination of the lot.

Publisher Activision hasn’t used real names in Call of Duty or Warzone since 2021’s Vanguard, mainly due to legal reasons. It’s probably not due to licensing costs, as the series stuck with the real names of guns since its inception. It’s more likely the result of a $73m lawsuit against Remington Arms by victims of Sandy Hook. Time documents that the marketing of Remington’s guns, at least in part, influenced the perpetrator.

Unfortunately, players will just have to suck it up since this is the way things are done now. If you fancy trying the game for yourself, you’ll want to get in on the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 beta.
