Samsung joins the 500Hz OLED party with the Odyssey G6 monitor

Gaming displays are advancing faster than GPUs can follow.

Samsung has announced its first 500Hz OLED-based gaming monitor, pushing the speed bar one step further. At 27in in size, it offers a nice mix of performance and image quality, making it a prime choice for demanding gamers and esports players. Plus, thanks to its Quantum Dot layer, even creators and professionals can do some work.

The Odyssey OLED G6 G60SF is a flat gaming monitor rocking a QHD (2560×1440) resolution. It offers a new level of performance, rivalling the best TN LCD panels while boasting better image quality and, oftentimes, colour accuracy. Though the QHD resolution isn’t the highest, at 27in size, the image is still sharp from a normal desk viewing distance. But most importantly, with only half the pixels to deal with compared to a 4K panel, your GPU will have more chances to reach the 500Hz maximum refresh rate. As is typical of OLED-based panels, the pixel response time is also great, rated for 0.03ms GtG.

Thanks to QD-OLED’s technology improvements, this panel moves a step up in the brightness department, reaching up to 1,000nits peak. It also boasts the VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification, meaning it can maintain deep black levels in dark scenes while offering a moderate maximum luminosity. Static contrast is rated for 1,000,000:1, though for all intents and purposes, it’s pretty much infinite thanks to OLED’s per-pixel local dimming. All of this is topped by an anti-glare film said to reduce reflections by 54% compared to conventional solutions.

But that’s not all. The Odyssey OLED G6 is also Pantone Validated, ensuring accurate colour reproduction, with the ability to display over 2,100 colours and more than 110 SkinTone shades from Pantone’s library. Add to that QD-OLED’s wide colour gamut, and you get a monitor that can be used for both gaming and work.

Connectivity-wise, you will find two HDMI 2.1, one DisplayPort 1.4, plus a two-port USB hub. The stand is thin and small, taking up little space on the desk, all while offering a complete set of adjustments, including 120mm height, -2° to +25° tilt, 30° swivel, and 92° pivot. A 100mm VESA mount is handy if you want more ergonomic control.

Overall, the build design is smooth and modern with gentle curves that terminate into slim edges, giving it a classy style that can fit anywhere. Plus, the brand’s CoreLighting+ RGB ring on the back is available for those wanting some ambient lighting while gaming.

The G6 is designed for people who demand the best performance across long gaming sessions. It features Samsung’s OLED Safeguard+, which combines a graphite sheet with a heatpipe system to deliver five times heat diffusion, the company says, helping boost the longevity of your panel. The usual screen saver, taskbar and logo detection are also present to reduce the burn-in of static objects.

The Odyssey OLED G6 is available at $999.99 from Samsung’s official store, backed by a three-year warranty. A somewhat steep price considering how the competition is offering 500Hz QD-OLEDs at $850. But if you like its sleek look and feature set, $150 extra may not be a dealbreaker.
