Sandisk just released a compact, drop-resistant portable SSD, offering up to 2TB of fast storage

This slim and lightweight portable drive has no moving parts and 2m drop protection, so you can rest easy knowing your data is safe.

Sandisk has officially launched its Portable SSD (V3) lineup, targeting everyday users looking for a reliable and easy-to-use external USB drive. Available in capacities up to 2TB, the Portable SSD (V3) is designed to be all you need to keep your frequently-accessed data and backups close at hand.

Officially unveiled in February 2026, the Sandisk Portable SSD (V3) series, model name SDSSDE31, is finally available to purchase, offering a choice between 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities in a compact and light package, measuring 45 x 85 x 10mm and weighing 33.2g. All models are listed as reaching a 1,000MB/s sequential read speed when linked to a USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gb/s port. While write speed has not been disclosed, Sandisk notes that it’s lower than the read speed, which is nothing unusual.

Although it’s plenty fast enough for most users’ needs, the Sandisk Portable SSD (V3) isn’t only about performance; it’s also about convenience and reliability. Sandisk says it’s compatible with practically any device that supports external storage, including PCs and laptops powered by macOS 13 and Windows 10, as well as smartphones running Android 13 or iOS 15. Understandably, these devices must have a USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gb/s or faster interface to take advantage of the full speed of this external SSD.

These drives can also withstand a fair bit of accidental damage, with Sandisk advertising protection against drops up to 2m in height. Note that you can also subscribe to a data recovery plan for a small fee, if you want an additional layer of protection.

While the Sandisk Portable SSD (V3)’s 1,000MB/s read speed sits far behind Sandisk’s premium range, which can reach up to 4,000MB/s, it’s still nearly double the speed of the fastest SATA SSDs, and more than fast enough for the students and office workers it targets. Furthermore, going premium commands nearly double the price per TB.

The Sandisk Portable SSD (V3) is available from the brand’s official store at $99.99 for 500GB, $159.99 for 1TB, and $299.99 for 2TB capacity, backed by a three-year warranty.
