Asus has announced the ROG Strix XG27UCG Gen2, a 4K dual-mode gaming monitor that can switch between two resolutions and refresh rates to deliver the optimal experience. Marking a noticeable speed bump over its predecessor, this monitor could be your one-stop shop for all your gaming needs.
The ROG Strix XG27UCG Gen2 is based on a 27in IPS panel capable of switching between 4K at 162Hz and 1080p at 485Hz. This makes it ideal for players who require both clear high-speed motion for esports titles and high-quality visuals for story-driven games, as switching between these modes is as simple as pressing a button. Asus also claims a 1ms GtG response time, indicating good handling of fast motion. Better yet, the XG27UCG Gen2 boasts ELMB Sync technology, which provides even better clarity thanks to backlight strobing while maintaining variable refresh rate (VRR) benefits.

Those who care about image quality will enjoy the monitor’s 1,300:1 contrast ratio, which is higher than what is typically achieved by IPS panels, helping it preserve more detail in dark scenes. Asus also advertises support for HDR content thanks to the panel’s 600nits peak brightness, netting it VESA’s DisplayHDR 400 certification. That said, the HDR experience won’t be optimal due to the lack of local dimming zones. Other specs include support for Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium.
Moving to colour reproduction, the ROG Strix XG27UCG Gen2 covers 95% of the DCI-P3 and 130% of the sRGB colour gamuts, providing vibrant images and great uniformity. Connectivity-wise, you get one DisplayPort 1.4, one HDMI 2.1, and one USB Type-C with DP Alt Mode, plus a 3.5mm audio jack for your headphones. This allows it to be hooked to a desktop, laptop, and console at the same time, enabling you take full advantage of the capabilities of each. Note, however, that while the Type-C connection can power your devices, it is limited to just 15W, which is not enough to feed a laptop.

Regarding ergonomics, Asus hasn’t cheapened the stand’s versatility, offering -5° to +20° tilt, 40° swivel, 90° pivot, and 110mm height adjustment. Those wanting more control can use the 100x100mm VESA mount to install a monitor arm. Lastly, the usual OSD suit is present here too, adding features such as Dynamic Crosshair, Shadow Boost, and Smart Pixel – a built-in upscaling option meant to maintain good image quality when using the 1080p mode.
While Asus hasn’t shared the price and release date of the ROG Strix XG27UCG Gen2, we expect it to launch soon, slotting at or slightly above its predecessor. The latter is currently listed at $337.99 (discounted from $449).
