MSI has added another AMD B550 motherboard to its roster, this time targeting users on tight budgets. The MSI Pro B550M WiFi6E focuses on essentials, while including both Wi-Fi 6E and PCIe 4.0 support, but limits other features to the bare minimum to keep costs down.
The Pro B550M WiFi6E is an mATX motherboard measuring 243.84 x 210mm. There are no fancy heatsinks or RGB lighting, and you won’t find a lightning-fast USB-C port or 2.5Gb LAN either, let alone a preinstalled I/O shield. That said, MSI has kept the important bits, such as fast DDR4 memory support and PCIe 4.0 to maintain good performance with modern GPUs and SSDs. It’s a board designed to make efficient use of your budget.
Unlike more expensive boards, which come stacked with PCIe and M.2 slots, as well as more USB ports than you would ever need, the Pro B550M WiFi6E keeps it light, offering just one PCIe 4.0 x16 slot for graphics, one M.2 Gen 4 connector for SSDs, and DDR4 DIMM slots supporting up to 64GB of 4,600MT/s memory.
If you need more expansion or storage, your only choice is a slow PCIe 3.0 x1 slot or SATA 6Gb/s ports. The same goes for the networking side. There is no fancy 5Gb or even 2.5Gb LAN; you get a standard Gigabit port, and that’s it. Even so, MSI has decided to pair this one with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth wireless connections, which is not a given at this level
In terms of I/O, we find four USB 3.2 5Gbps ports, two USB 2.0 sockets, and one PS/2 legacy port connector. There are also HDMI and DisplayPort outputs for CPUS with an integrated GPU, plus three 3.5mm audio jacks. Meanwhile, you can add four USB 2.0 ports plus two USB 3.2 5Gbps Type-A sockets via the front panel headers.
Like MSI’s recently launched MAG B550 Tomahawk WiFi, the Pro B550M WiFi6E supports AMD’s 5000, 4000, and 3000-series desktop processors. While the board remains compatible with 16-core Ryzen 9 CPUs, its smaller VRM design may not be able to extract the maximum performance from these power-hungry chips, especially during long high-demand sessions.
As such, you’re better off pairing it with a Ryzen 5 chip. The new Ryzen 5 5500F is a suitable companion, offering a low-cost / low-power option that still delivers good performance when paired with a mid-range GPU.
Likewise, you do get overclocking support, but I wouldn’t push it too far to avoid straining the VRMs. In fact, I would instead recommend undervolting your CPU, which, contrary to how it may sound, can result in better performance on top of reducing your chip’s power draw and heat output. To put it simply, the Pro B550M WiFi6E is a board for those wanting to avoid DDR5’s exorbitant prices, which have risen dramatically since 2025, and who don’t care about extra features or bling. That said, a small heatsink block on the VRM would have been welcome.
While MSI has yet to reveal pricing for this model, based on its specs and previous board releases, we can expect it to cost under £90. After all, the similar MSI PRO B550M-P WIFI6E is available for £89.99, with two more memory slots, more USB ports, and a wider PCB.
