Lenovo ThinkPad P16 mobile workstation packs Intel HX CPU and RTX A5500 GPU

Core i9 and up to 128GB of memory.

Lenovo has announced a new ThinkPad P16 mobile workstation, built by combining the best features of the ThinkPad P15 and P17 resulting in a compact machine promising high performance.

Measuring 364mm x 266mm x 30.23mm, its storm-grey chassis is made out of aluminium and weighs a beefy 2.95kg. Lenovo is also continuing to champion taller aspect ratios with a 16:10 screen featuring as standard.

ThinkPad P16 is powered by Intel’s 12th Gen HX Series CPUs, allowing for a 55W 16-core Core i9 chip alongside up to 128GB (4x32GB) DDR5-4800 memory, an RTX A5500 16GB GPU and an 8TB M.2 PCIe 4.0 SSD. An extremely performant machine that you can take with you everywhere.

Lenovo said that in order to cool this beast, its engineers had to come up with an all-new thermal solution comprising dual fans, dual vapour chambers, twin bypass design to reduce surface temperatures, revamped heat pipes, as well as a keyboard air intake.

Expanding on the 16:10 aspect ratio, the 16in display is also being made available in a choice of four variants:

  • 1920×1200 (FHD+) IPS panel with 300nits of brightness and 100 per cent sRGB coverage.
  • 2560×1600 (QHD+) IPS panel with 400nits of brightness and 100 per cent sRGB coverage.
  • 3840×2400 (UHD+) IPS panel with 600nits of brightness, 100 per cent AdobeRGB coverage, supporting HDR400 and Dolby Vision.
  • 3840×2400 (UHD+) touch OLED panel with 400nits of brightness, 100 per cent DCI-P3 coverage, supporting HDR500 and Dolby Vision.

Past experience tells us availability will vary from one region to the next, but the OLED touchscreen is naturally the stand-out choice. Connectivity-wise, we are getting two Thunderbolt 4, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, HDMI 2.1, 3.5mm audio jack and an SD card reader.

This workstation also includes a front-facing FHD camera, NFC, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2 and 4G LTE, alongside multiple security measures such as a fingerprint reader, IR camera, and a camera shutter, not to forget the massive 94Whr battery. Features may vary depending on models.

The ThinkPad P16 mobile workstation will be available later this month starting at $1,979.
