After a week of will-they-won’t-they speculation, it seems as though AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT will get an 8GB model after all. Reliable sources indicate that everything’s on track to launch day and date with its 16GB counterpart, but not necessarily in equal numbers.
This turn comes hot on the heels of earlier whispers that AMD might cancel the 8GB model entirely in favour of a more spacious 16GB version. It makes sense on paper given the shift in game system requirements favouring higher buffers, but this would’ve inevitably left budget-conscious buyers out in the cold.
Fortunately, rumours of RX 9060 XT 8GB’s cancellation have been greatly exaggerated. According to reliable sources chatting to Benchlife, “there are no plans to stop the supply or cancel it at this time… It is just rumors, and the main reason is entirely due to the reaction of the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti.”
GeForce RTX 5060 Ti reviews landed midway through April, but although the graphics card launched in both 8GB and 16GB variants, Nvidia withheld the smaller model from review. Once testers got their hands on it, the reason became clear as it vastly underperformed.
Such negative feedback is thought to have prompted AMD to double back on its own plans, which might not be entirely off the mark. Team Red’s launch strategy remains intact and an outright discontinuation is off the table, particularly as Benchlife’s sources say the graphics cards are already fresh off the production line, but it could still see some changes in direction.
Future production may slow to allocate more resources to the 16GB model, and some suggest AMD might skip the DIY market entirely, instead focusing on OEMs. We should find out more when the graphics card launches at Computex.
