GPD puts AMD’s 16-core Strix Halo CPU in your hands

Short of adding a dedicated GPU, the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 is the fastest unified CPU/GPU solution on the market, trading blows with the RTX 4060 mobile in gaming.

GPD has teased its upcoming Win 5 gaming handheld, featuring high-end specs primed to offer outstanding performance on the go. Powered by AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395 APU, this handheld has all the horsepower to run games at higher refresh rates or graphics settings, upgrading the user experience to new levels. That’s the promise, anyway.

Within GPD’s short presentation teaser, the handheld was shown delivering between 160 and 180fps during combat in Black Myth: Wukong. These are some excellent figures, though the graphics settings weren’t disclosed. We at least know that the machine is capable of high-refresh gaming for those who don’t mind reducing settings. That said, it’s not clear if frame generation wasn’t used to achieve these sky-high fps figures.

Assuming no trickery was involved, the GPD Win 5 seems quite the beast, especially considering that the handheld was running at 57W. As a reminder, the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 can be configured up to 120W to unlock its full potential. The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 is the top offering in AMD’s Strix Halo lineup, boasting 16 Zen 6 cores clocked up to 5.1GHz alongside a massive Radeon 8060S GPU packing 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units. During the presentation, the CPU temperature remained under control, hovering around 64°C, with the Radeon 8060S GPU clocking up to 2.5GHz.

Though we didn’t get to see the Win 5’s design and control layout, its shape looks a lot like the GPD Win 4 (2025), which in turn looks a lot like the PS Vita. If correct, we can expect an Xbox control layout with a sliding screen that hides a keyboard underneath. As a flagship model, you can also expect a high refresh display, fingerprint scanner, plus one of those tiny touchpads.

Size-wise, the presentation doesn’t include any point of comparison. That said, if the Win 5 follows the same design as its predecessor, it should be shorter than a Steam Deck. As you can guess, to offset this compactness, the Win 5 will likely be as thick or thicker than the Win 4 to accommodate the cooler needed to handle the substantial power difference.

While pricing has yet to be revealed, seeing how the Win 4 retails for £1,189 on Amazon UK, it wouldn’t shock me to see the Win 5 at £1,500 or more. GPD is expected to fully unveil the Win 5 at ChinaJoy 2025 on August 1, so stay tuned.
