New AMD Radeon drivers make it easier to inject FSR 4 into more games

If your game supports FSR 3.1 and uses DirectX 12, chances are FSR 4 will be available.

AMD has released new graphics drivers for Radeon GPUs, complete with the usual updates game support, bug fixes, but most importantly, improvements to FSR 4 overrides. Now, most games with FSR 3.1 can enjoy an injection of Team Red’s AI upscaler.

AMD Software Adrenalin Edition 25.9.1 extends native FSR 4 support to 91 games, according to the brand’s official list published alongside the driver. However, this number is much larger once you include FSR 3.1 games.

Prior to this driver update, FSR 4 injection required explicit whitelisting. Now, AMD Software Adrenalin Edition 25.9 patch notes detail that you can enable the feature on “most games that support FSR 3.1 with DirectX 12.”

While a welcome move, this still leaves FSR 4 support trailing far behind DLSS 4. Nvidia’s solution doesn’t require games to be using a particular past version of the upscaler for overwriting, while AMD’s needs a base FSR 3.1 DLL to work.

Then there’s the DirectX 12 limitation. This leaves out games that earlier versions of DirectX or alternative APIs, such as Vulkan or OpenGL. Baldur’s Gate 3 springs to mind as one-such popular example, which still can’t upgrade to FSR 4 via AMD’s official tool.

It’s great to see AMD making FSR 4 more widespread, but it’s clear there’s still plenty of room for improvement. Personally, I’m still holding out for the Radeon RX 9000 Series requirement to fall away so that my Radeon RX 7900 XTX can get in on the AI upscaling fun.

AMD understandably prefers that developers natively implement FSR 4, but retroactive upgrades remain important given how poor older versions of the upscaler were, particularly compared to this latest version. The gap between each iteration of FSR will only grow following the debut of FSR Redstone too.

Now, while this automatic upgrade is nice and easy to use, AMD still encourages developers to natively implement FSR 4 in their games using the new SDK 2.0. This way, they will be ready for upcoming neural rendering technologies, such as those in FSR Redstone. Furthermore, this should allow AMD to seamlessly upgrade said games’ FSR version without their intervention, boosting games’ quality as new technologies mature.
