We’re seemingly one step closer to the Steam Frame finally seeing the light of day, as changes to Steam’s backend show Valve has a reservation system for the VR headset ready to go. While you can’t secure a spot in the queue just yet, those wanting a system should prepare for a similar purchasing experience to the Steam Machine and Controller.
Regular Valve leaker and VR enthusiast Brad Lynch shared their findings of a Steam Frame reservation queue via an X post. They made the discovery following changes to two Steam Frame ‘packages’, the term Valve uses for different store listings, which received updates for the first time in months earlier in September.
It actually seems that the reservation system is already up in Steam's backend for these two SKUs..

Lynch hasn’t shared any media relating to the reservation queue, but claims to have received an “incomplete lottery drawing notification email” following some tinkering with the API. Regardless, this indicates that Valve doesn’t plan to offer headsets on a first-come-first-served basis until the firm randomises the first batch of reservations into a queue.
While we won’t know for certain until the updated store pages go live, this lottery system seems likely following prior rumours. More concretely, this strategy would mirror the release of the Steam Machine, which enjoyed a far smoother and fairer launch than the initially scalper-ridden Steam Controller because of Valve’s reservation scheme.
We still don’t yet know when Valve plans to launch its VR headset, nor how much it will cost, but at least one developer seems confident the Steam Frame release date is imminent. Combine this sentiment with the discovery of a ready-to-go reservation queue, plus the recent unboxing and setup videos leak, and it’s hard not to think we don’t have long to wait for the system.
