The Blood of Dawnwalker system requirements demand an RTX 5090 for native 4K Ultra settings

Upscalers should make hitting 60fps at 4K with ultra settings easier, but Blood of Dawnwalker is sizing up to be a demanding RPG regardless, particularly when it comes to CPU power.

Developer Rebel Wolves has finally revealed The Blood of Dawnwalker system requirements, giving us all several months to prepare for the game’s release on September 3. While this eagerly anticipated RPG from ex-Witcher devs can run on fledgling hardware at a push, those with ambitions to run the game at the highest fidelity will need to settle for nothing less than an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090.

Before diving into the specifics for each of the three performance categories, I’ll cover commonalities that span across them all. Regardless of resolution, settings, or frame rate target, you’ll need 16GB of RAM and 60GB of free space on an SSD before sinking your fangs into this adventure. Finally, despite support for the operating system ending last year, Blood of Dawnwalker will run on Windows 10, as well as 11.

Ultra

Rebel Wolves helpfully provides two sets of system requirements for 60fps using Ultra settings, detailing what components you’ll need to hit this target depending on your resolution. Irrespective of pixel count, you’ll need a graphics card with at least 16GB of VRAM.

The only GPU apparently capable of satiating Blood of Dawnwalker’s appetite at 4K is the GeForce RTX 5090, accepting no substitutes from AMD. However, it’s important to note that this recommendation and all others don’t use any upscalers or frame generation. Sprinkle in some DLSS 4.5 or FSR 4.1, and the likes of the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and Radeon RX 9070 XT could be up to the task. Rebel Wolves says that upscaling and frame gen support will be included in the game, citing DLSS and FSR as examples.

Looking to QHD specs only further instils confidence that upscaling will make 4K achievable with less-powerful GPUs. After all, if the GeForce RTX 4080 and Radeon RX 7900 XTX can manage 60fps at this resolution, then the aforementioned cards may well be able to manage it as well.

All that said, it seems CPU performance will have a large part to play in steering Blood of Dawnwalker frame rates north of 60fps, as both the Ryzen 9 7950X and Core i5-13600K are meaty processors with lots of cores. This isn’t too surprising given the complexity and scale of the open world we’ve seen thus far, and it looks as though it runs best with multiple threads at the helm.

Recommended

Stepping down to high settings provides some respite for less-powerful systems, with VRAM requirements dropping to a reasonable 12GB. That said, the game continues to demand surprisingly powerful processors.

The gap between QHD Ultra and High is surprisingly small, only stepping down a rung or two on the graphics card ladder. You’ll need a graphics card with at least as much power as a GeForce RTX 4070 Ti or a Radeon RX 7800 XT.

Dropping resolution to FHD while retaining High settings and continuing to aim for 60fps requires a GPU akin to the Radeon RX 6800 XT or GeForce RTX 5060. It’s curious that Rebel Wolves suggests using the latter card despite calling for 12GB of VRAM, as the GeForce RTX 5070 more accurately fits this bill.

There’s little movement on the CPU front at the settings, though, as the Ryzen 9 7900X and Core i5-13600 are very similar to the ones needed to meet the game’s Ultra requirements. Blood of Dawnwalker could very well punish processors in the same way as Baldur’s Gate 3, which could prove bothersome for the majority of folks running 6-core chips.

Minimum

Cutting back settings to the bone, Blood of Dawnwalker will run on relatively ancient hardware, but only at 30fps.

The now-legendary GeForce GTX 1070 apparently has enough grunt left in it to bring this RPG to life, though in an admittedly sickly state. This goes for the Radeon RX Vega 56 too, and even the Arc A580 gets a rare shout-out. These aren’t difficult marks to meet, to the point that I’m now curious about how well the game will run on the likes of Steam Deck.

CPU requirements still feel a touch high here, particularly the callout for an 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 3700X. Hopefully, this doesn’t point to poor processor optimisation, as Unreal Engine 5 doesn’t really need any further damage to its reputation in that regard.
