Microsoft has revised its Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for personal devices, adding an extra year of support. This new update extends security updates until October 2027, seemingly to give users more time to transition to Windows 11.
As a reminder, Windows 10 entered end-of-life (EOL) status on October 14, 2025. To keep the ageing OS safe from security threats, Microsoft launched its ESU program, which allows users and enterprises to keep receiving security patches. Initially, this program was only accessible via a $30 payment, or a 1,000 Microsoft Reward points redemption, but it was later made free for EU and cloud users, offering security updates until October 14, 2026.
Today’s change extends this support period by another year, which was previously only available for enterprise users with a hefty $122 charge per device. Microsoft says this additional support period is meant to provide users with more time to migrate to Windows 11, as Windows 10 continues to maintain a healthy user base, despite no longer receiving any new features. While Windows 11’s market share has been growing, Windows 10 still accounts for 26.21% of the worldwide market, according to StatCounter.
While some people prefer to remain on Windows 10, thanks to its less bloated nature, others simply don’t have a choice due to Windows 11’s system requirements, which block them from upgrading. Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, which aren’t available on some old machines, leaving many otherwise functional PCs ineligible for the upgrade.
If you haven’t done this before, to receive these security updates, you will need to participate in the ESU program. An enrolment wizard will be made available to Windows 10 users through notifications, and in your Windows Settings, giving you one of three methods from which to choose. One option is at no additional cost, using Windows Backup to sync your settings to the cloud. You also have the option to spend $30, or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. Once you select an option and follow the on-screen steps, your PC will automatically be enrolled.
Although this extension delays the end of Windows 10’s support, Microsoft’s long-term strategy remains focused on Windows 11 and modern platforms that meet its new security requirements. Come October 12, 2027, Windows 10 will be officially abandoned.
