Leaked AMD CPU could be the cheaper Ryzen 7 9800X3D we all want

Sporting eight cores and 16 threads, Ryzen 7 9700X3D should provide the lion's share of its beloved sibling's performance at a lower price.

If there’s one processor tech that gamers can’t get enough of it’s 3D V-Cache. AMD is keenly aware of this situation, as Ryzen 9000X3D CPUs continue to fly off the shelves. It now looks as though AMD plans to capitalise on this momentum further, with recent leaks pointing to an 8-core chip that’s cheaper than the 9800X3D, but still has plenty of that sweet, sweet cache.

PassMark’s CPU Benchmark database now includes an entry from an unannounced processor, Ryzen 7 9700X3D. From this leak we now have some idea of the CPU’s core and thread count, as well as performance. However, the latter information isn’t likely to reflect stock speeds.

As the name of the chip suggests, Ryzen 7 9700X3D is similar to Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Both cores sport eight cores and 16 threads, which should in turn mean the new chip has 96MB of L3 cache as it’ll only have a single CCD (Core Complex Die). Looking back, AMD has followed this manufacturing trend before with Ryzen 7 5800X3D and 5700X3D.

However, frequencies are curiously high on Ryzen 7 9700X3D in this leak, with a top speed of 5.8GHz. For context, Ryzen 7 9800X3D has a maximum boost of 5.2GHz. It seems to me that the person responsible for this entry likely applied an overclock to the chip, or the frequency is simply bogus.

With the above in mind, I don’t believe anyone should pay much attention to the chip’s single or multi thread scores as they appear above. Think of them more as potential for the processor. Regardless, I’m confident performance of Ryzen 7 9700X3D will fall just below that of Ryzen 7 9800X3D.

The prospect of more 3D V-Cache processors hitting the market excites me, particularly the likes of Ryzen 7 9700X3D, which could help make AMD’s X3D tech more affordable. I just hope that AMD doesn’t limit availability, as it has with other chips like Ryzen 5 7600X3D.

I remain hopeful we’ll see a wider launch of this chip, as AMD seems intent on flooding the market with X3D. Prior to this leak, whispers of Ryzen 9 9950X3D2, Ryzen 7 9850X3D, and Ryzen 5 7500X3D emerged. If all hold true, we should expect a deluge of 3D V-Cache processors to hit the market in the coming months.

If that happens, it’s bad news for Intel, whose Core Ultra 200 processors were already struggling to contend with the might of 3D V-Cache. Put Ryzen 9 9950X3D up against Core Ultra 9 285K and the results aren’t pretty for Intel. How much these new processors will compound AMD’s lead is anyone’s guess, but the gap will almost certainly widen.
