Gaming on Zen 6 Ryzen processors could be notably smoother than prior CPU generations, with AMD allegedly introducing new features to improve frequency consistency and boost 1% low performance. This apparently entails a suite of tools that allow the operating system to more smartly manage the chip, directing tasks and resources to the more important cores for given tasks.
This information arrives by way of a tip off to hardware outlet Videocardz from 1usmus, the creator of the Hyrda OC tool for Ryzen CPUs. According to the developer, Zen 6 will arrive with features including Collaborative Processor Performance Control (CPPC), per-core EPP Boost, as well as PQOS Global Bandwidth Enforcement. I’ll now explain what each of those technologies apparently do, and how they would affect performance.
1usmus touts CPPC as a means for operating systems and Zen 6 CPU firmware to manage the processor on a per-core basis. Controls such as ‘FloorPerf’ would, as the name suggests, set the minimum performance floor for each core, by focussing the share of power budget on to important cores through starving less-busy or powerful cores. Theoretically, this should allow for more consistent operating frequencies and faster restoration of clock speeds during pauses between tasks.
Meanwhile, ‘HighestFreq’ would provide an operating system with a clearer picture as to which Zen 6 cores boast the highest operating frequencies. This should ensure performance-intense workloads such as gaming run on the most-powerful cores available, rather than Zen 6c or even Zen 6 Low Power alternatives. It’s unclear whether these non-standard core types will be present on desktop SKUs, but it’s highly likely we’ll see both materialise on mobile.
Per-core EPP Boost apparently instructs processors whether they should prioritise performance or efficiency. On paper, this should allow for smarter core management, as active cores remain in performance mode even during pauses between tasks, while others remain idle. Those pauses are often killer for 1% low frame rates, and should provide a notable performance improvement.
Rounding off this alleged suite, PQOS Global Bandwidth Enforcement should control how much memory bandwidth is available to background threads. This runs in addition to a new memory profiler, which would capture any L3 cache misses. Through this, operating systems could reduce resources available to background tasks that are negatively affecting gaming performance, thus boosting 1% lows.
AMD is yet to reveal any of the features above, so take all this information with due scepticism. For the moment, the company’s only lifted the lid on its Zen 6 Epyc lineup, with Ryzen sure to follow in the coming months. Here’s hoping we learn more on the latter front come CES 2027, if not sooner.
