Arctic has released the Freezer 4U-Altra, a new variant of its server and workstation CPU cooler optimised for Ampere Altra and Altra Max processors. Engineered for efficiency, the Freezer 4U-Altra is rated for an impressive 350W of CPU heat dissipation while consuming only 2.88W, reducing platform power requirements and total cost of ownership.
Like the Freezer 4U-OneX, the Freezer 4U-Altra is based on a large 4U-chassis-compatible aluminium heatsink, featuring two of Arctic’s P-series fans in a push-pull configuration. It measures 156mm (L) x 124mm (W) x 145mm (H) and weighs 1,288g, just enough to fit in 4U server racks while retaining up to 53mm of memory clearance. As its name suggests, this version is aimed at Ampere’s Altra LGA4926 socket.

This time around, Arctic went with a direct-touch design using eight 6mm copper heat pipes, conveniently spaced to cover the entire CPU package. Arctic reckons this design offers efficient heat dissipation under high-performance requirements, built to meet the demands of professional environments.
If our tests of the similar Freezer 4U-M are any indication, the Freezer 4U-Altra could be yet another great cooler. As a reminder, the 4U-M maintained a Ryzen Threadripper 7980X at 78°C under sustained load, nearly matching the performance of MSI’s MEG CoreLiquid S360 AIO.

The Freezer 4U-Altra’s large fin stack is flanked by two 120mm PWM-controlled, dual-ball-bearing fans, optimised for pressure and long service life. These continuous-operation fans are also tuned for a balance between cooling performance and energy efficiency, ensuring optimal airflow without creating excessive noise. Arctic claims that they are particularly well-suited for compact 4U servers or workstations built around powerful processors, with a rated 71.9cfm of airflow and 3.3mmH20 of static pressure.
The cooler also comes bundled with the brand’s MX-7 performance thermal paste, a top pick from our 20-compound group test on AMD and Intel CPUs.

The Freezer 4U-Altra is available on Amazon, eBay, and Arctic’s store at $55.49, backed by a six-year warranty. Note however that this is a lofty 30% limited-time launch discount, as the official MSRP sits at $80.49 / €69.99.
