Asus breaks multiple overclocking world records with sub-$200 B850 motherboard

You too can push your memory and CPU to the max without pouring half your budget on a motherboard.

Asus has demonstrated the power of its latest AM5 board, breaking 12 world records using various Ryzen CPU and DDR5 memory configurations. Dubbed B850M AYW Gaming OC WiFi7 – quite a mouthful – it packs all the features needed to boost the performance of your system without the flagship aspects that make other overclocking boards expensive.

The brand’s representative, Tony, showcased this sub-$200 board in a BiliBili video, putting it through various tests and benchmarks. It went head-to-head with premium models such as the ROG Maximus Z790 Apex, which was previously featured in the 9.13GHz Intel Core i9-14900KF frequency record. Even so, this affordable solution was able to claim no fewer than 12 leading spots in Cinebench using the Ryzen 9700X, 9800X3D, and 9900X3D.

Ryzen 7 9700X World Records:

  • SuperPi- 1M: 6 Sec 131 ms
  • Cinebench R23 multi-core: 31,295
  • Cinebench R20: 12,110
  • Cinebench R15: 4,812
  • Cinebench R11.5: 55.41

Ryzen 7 9800X3D World Records:

  • Cinebench 2024: 1,801
  • Cinebench R11.5: 57.14
  • Cinebench R15: 4,885
  • Cinebench R20: 12,213

Ryzen 9 9900X3D World Records:

  • Cinebench R11.5: 79.49
  • Cinebench R15: 6,975
  • Cinebench R23 multi-core: 44,909

As usual, all these scores were achieved with the help of liquid nitrogen cooling, allowing the Ryzen 9700X plus Ryzen 9800X3D to reach 6.9GHz and the Ryzen 9900X3D to hit 6.7GHz. Regarding memory overclocking, Tony pushed an 8,400MT/s DDR5 kit up to 9,800MT/s without destroying latency. While far from the current record holder, 9,800MT/s is already plenty fast, and most importantly, stable without extreme cooling.

This, combined with a nice spec list, makes the B850M AYW Gaming OC WiFi 7 a prime choice for enthusiasts who like to tune their hardware yet can’t afford the exorbitant price of a flagship board. It puts money where it matters. For example, instead of going for a quad DIMM design, it offers just two slots that have optimised trace routing to reduce signal noise and improve memory support/overclocking. And for the CPU, 12+2+1 80A power phases should be more than enough to tame any 24/7 overclock. Most notably, it features an external clock generator, which allows the CPU base clock to be detached from the rest of the components, opening new venues for overclocking.

For a sub-$200 board, the B850M AYW Gaming OC WiFi7 is a dream come true for budget users. The only issue is that Asus seems to offer it exclusively in the Asian market. We hope to see it available worldwide someday, as its value is undeniable.
