Fractal Design Epoch merges elegant case design with performant cooling

Epoch follows in North's footsteps, swapping wood for mesh to improve cooling.

Fractal Design has released its new Epoch PC case, featuring a mesh front for improved cooling and premium RGB fans. Following the brand’s sleek and clean style, complete with subtle visual accents, Epoch seems like a natural fit for minimalist desks as well as busier setups.

Fractal Design Epoch is a mid-tower case, measuring 447mm (L) x 215mm (W) x 469mm (H) and weighing about 9.41kg. It’s broadly similar to Fractal Design North, but swaps the wooden façade for a performance-oriented mesh.

The brand plans to launch at least five variants of Epoch, mixing between black and white colourways, in addition to RGB and non-RGB fans. The biggest difference most will notice is on the basic model, which gets a steel side panel instead of tempered glass. On the other hand, the top-spec comes bundled with up to three high-end Momentum 12 RGB fans featuring LCP blades and FDP bearings motor.

Inside, we find enough room to accomodate ATX motherboards, 372mm graphics cards, 170mm CPU coolers, 255mm PSUs, as well as 240mm radiators up top and 360mm rads up front. As for storage, the case can hold two 2.5in drives behind the motherboard tray, plus two 3.5/2.5in near the PSU. However, installing a front radiator reduces GPU compatibility to 345mm, while installing HDDs on the bottom limits the PSU length to 155mm. Most hardware should fit into this case just fine even with these limitations in mind.

Epoch’s interior is full of smart finishes such as grommets and channels to route cables, alongside velcro straps to hold everything tightly. Lastly, I/O is standard fare for modern cases, providing one USB Type-C 20Gb/s, two USB Type-A 5Gb/s, plus a 3.5mm headphone/mic combo jack.

Cooling-wise, the Epoch provides room for up to six 120mm fans or four 140mm, spread between the front, top, and rear. Both the front and top can fit 360mm and 240mm radiators, respectively. Furthermore, both vents come equipped with easily removable filters, allowing you to customise cooling as you wish without worrying about dust. Fractal Design has left the back very open, which should help output heat efficiently without requiring more fans.
