Following the launch of DLSS 5, Nvidia has now confirmed plans to bring the neural rendering tech to its GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards. While the expansion of support is welcome, bringing thousands if not millions more users to the table, there’s no word on when exactly older GPUs will have access to the feature.
In a recent press release, Nvidia stated: “DLSS 5 is our most computationally demanding model to date. Since we initially announced it in March, we’ve achieved a 5X performance gain and there’s more to come. Our current focus is on optimizing performance for the GeForce RTX 50 Series with model updates expected later this fall. RTX 50 Series performance is more fully tuned, we plan to work on expanding official support to the GeForce RTX 40 Series.”
While this promise of DLSS 5 support for GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards doesn’t come with a solid release window, the speed at which Nvidia claims to have improved the feature does provide some hope. If the company can transition from running neural rendering across two GeForce RTX 5090 to the likes of the GeForce RTX 5050 in just six months, owners of Lovelace pixels pushers may not be envious of Blackwell owners for too long.
Of course, this is all with relevance to official support. Modders already have the tech running on the GeForce RTX 40 series, pushing even further back in time with the RTX 30 and 20 series too. However, the latter two families have been able to do so with varying success, in large part due to their much older and less-powerful Tensor cores. This isn’t too surprising considering how DLSS 5 performance and power consumption shapes up on the RTX 50 series.
For now, the only game to officially support neural rendering is NBA 2K27, with no other titles on the immediate horizon. This should make the wait for support on GeForce RTX 40 series cards all the easier. However, those aforementioned modders have managed to get DLSS 5 running in plenty of other games, sans any developer tweaks.
