Nvidia’s new DLSS frame gen performance mode already works on GeForce RTX 30 GPUs, thanks to this mod

While performance and stability aren't guaranteed with this unofficial mod, it gives owners of older GPUs a choice.

Modders have once more come to the rescue of old GeForce RTX 30 GPU owners, albeit unofficially, this time bringing Nvidia’s new performance-optimised frame generation algorithm to older graphics cards. While the mod’s creator hasn’t shared any performance figures, if this implementation is even half as good as Nvidia’s claims, it’s a win for owners of older GPUs.

Dubbed Universal MFG Unlocker 1.5.0, this mod enables Ampere GPUs to run the faster DLSS Preset C that Nvidia introduced recently for RTX 40 and 50 GPUs, as well as RTX Spark machines. According to Nvidia, DLSS Preset C can boost performance by up to 35% on the RTX 5060 8GB, although gains depend on the selected level of multi-frame generation (MFG), with the higher 6x mode benefiting most. This is possible thanks to a new, lighter AI algorithm that replaces the existing optical flow AI model.

While no performance figures have been shared for the mod, Dashdogy, the developer behind Universal MFG Unlocker, says RTX 30 support is now stable, with smoother pacing at 3x and above. Logically, this lighter model should be valuable for RTX 30 GPUs, as they lack the newer 4th-generation Tensor cores available on newer GPUs. Since DLSS frame generation requires real-time neural network passes to build frames, older hardware experiences a higher overhead, which could result in degraded frame pacing and latency.

Note, however, that this mod doesn’t magically make DLSS MFG work on unsupported games. It mainly tricks Nvidia’s communication pipeline to unlock above frame gen modes above 2x and the new Preset C on unsupported hardware, and it’s entirely unofficial. As such, stability and performance may vary a lot between games, so expect crashes and other oddities. Furthermore, it currently mainly works on DirectX 12 games, as Vulkan support is not yet available.
