Though GeForce RTX 5090 is only several months into its reign as the world’s most-powerful consumer graphics card, the next holder of that title should be with us before we know it. However, current rumours place the wait for what is presumably GeForce RTX 6090 as shorter than the gap between the current king and its predecessor.
Speaking on the Broken Silicon podcast, YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead (MLID) alleges RTX 6090 should hit the market in “early to mid 2027.” They state the source for this launch window estimate comes from AMD internal documents, namely those in relation to the the company’s RDNA 5 architecture.
Translating “early to mid” into months, this means RTX 6090 could launch in January 2027 in the best case scenario. However, such a window also means Nvidia could eye up a release as late as June or July. The company likely won’t hone in on a more specific timeframe for a while yet.
Should Nvidia launch in early 2027, i.e. January-March, that makes for a two-year and two-month gap between generations at most. This would mark a shorter reign for RTX 5090 than its predecessor, RTX 4090, which sat atop the proverbial graphics card throne for two years and three months.
While a month or two may not seem like a huge deal, it makes all the difference to financial quarters. Nvidia’s profit priorities will understandably continue to place data centre revenue above gaming, but the company undoubtedly would prefer to have a successor to its Blackwell architecture out the door sooner rather than later for the sake of both verticals.
Of course, it’s worth remembering this would-be launch window reportedly comes from AMD and not Nvidia. There’s every chance that Team Red’s information isn’t on the money, and we’ll need to wait for something to emerge from Team Green’s labs to be sure.
In the short term, there’s seemingly no threat to RTX 5090 dominance. Instead, leaks point to Nvidia bolstering its midrange offerings with an RTX 50 Super Series refresh. Meanwhile, there’s room for AMD to expand into the budget market with RX 9060, challenging both Arc B580 and RTX 5050.
