Noctua even has a camera in its roster now, and it’s designed to prove your photos aren’t AI slop

A 5V 40mm Noctua fan helps keep this camera's internal silicon cool, without creating too much noise or vibration.

I’ll admit I thought this was a joke at first, but I’ve checked my calendar, and April 1st is indeed a long way off. Yes, this Noctua camera is absolutely real. Noctua has just announced a collaboration with camera maker Josh Cowell to make a device called the CAIM1, and it’s designed to provide cryptographic proof that your photos and videos haven’t been generated by AI.

As you would expect from a Noctua collaboration, the CAIM1 is clad in the classic beige and brown colour scheme, and it also features the company’s cooling hardware. That’s because the internal silicon, based on a Tropic Square TROPIC01 chip, gets too hot if there’s no active cooling, which presented a dilemma to the design team.

“CAIM1 runs entirely within a low-voltage battery domain,” explains Noctua, which meant that using a standard 12V fan would mean installing an extra step-up converter. “The CAIM1 team specifically wanted to avoid this,” says Noctua, “as voltage conversion would consume valuable circuit-board space, reduce battery efficiency and introduce electrical switching noise and ripple that could potentially affect image-sensor performance.”

The answer was to use a dinky 40mm Noctua NF-A4x10 5V PWM fan, which only uses up to 5V. It sits inside the camera shell, just behind the camera sensor’s heatsink. It then pulls air over the heatsink from the side, and pushed it out the other side. Meanwhile, Noctua’s NV-AV4 mounts prevent it from vibrating, by effectively decoupling the fan from the shell.

“When designing the CAIM1, our biggest hurdle was balancing the immense thermal output of a high performance edge compute board while keeping it trapped inside a portable, protective shell,” explains the camera’s creator, Josh Cowell.

“We chose Noctua because they provided the absolute best ratio of airflow to physical footprint, enabling us to prolong battery life without thermal throttling. Their fans are so quiet and vibration free that they keep our processors at peak performance without interfering with our audio or image capture at all.”

Meanwhile, the camera itself can take interchangeable lenses, and captures at 4K. The big deal, though, is its proof that your work hasn’t been churned out by a datacentre working from a prompt. CAIM stands for ‘counter artificial intelligence machine,’ and it’s designed to give your work a cryptographic stamp of authenticity.

“CAIM1 combines onboard hardware attestation with edge cryptographic proof generation,” says Noctua. “The resulting proof data is passed to immutable, decentralised storage, enabling the origin of the media to be verified independently.”
