Can AI improve performance to a notable degree?

Lenovo is claiming higher performance and efficiency with its new Legion laptop lineup thanks to AI. The new series is said to leverage the brand’s proprietary AI chips to improve gamers’ experience. Strong expectations that hopefully turn out to be correct.

The Legion gaming laptop lineup will include four new models:

  • Lenovo Legion 9i – Up to a 16in 3200×2000 Mini-LED IPS screen rocking 165Hz refresh rate, powered by an RTX 4090 mobile and a Core i9-14900HX.
  • Lenovo Legion 7i – Up to a 16in 3200×2000 IPS screen boasting 165Hz or 240Hz but lower resolution, powered by an RTX 4070 mobile and a Core i9-14900HX.
  • Lenovo Legion 5i – Up to a 16in 2560×1600 IPS panel running at 240Hz, powered by an RTX 4070 mobile and a Core i9-14900HX.
  • Lenovo Legion Slim 5 – Up to a 16in 2560×1600 IPS panel running at 240Hz, powered by an RTX 4070 mobile and a Ryzen 8040.

While impressive by themselves, hardware specs are not the star of the show this time. Lenovo shines a spotlight on AI features included in these slim packages. According to the brand, the new Legion series will feature proprietary AI hardware. Lenovo says the chip enables its laptops to achieve even higher fps and power efficiency.

For example, the Legion 9i will be able to deliver up to 230W intelligently thanks to the LA3-P AI chip. Depending on the scenario, the chip will dynamically adjust CPU and GPU power based on what the user is doing. This allows it to feed power to the component that needs it for that specific task. The latter is coupled with ‘Smart fps’, which tracks components’ power usage and the resulting frame rate. By running this data through an algorithm, the laptop can optimise power allocation and improve fps in games.

But wait, there’s more. The Legion series also has what Lenovo calls Lighting Audio Sync, which syncs the device’s RGB lights to the laptop’s sound for a more immersive experience. Otherwise, you can go the Ambilight route and sync the keyboard’s RGB with the screen. Lastly, owners can also facilitate their daily tasks by accessing Microsoft’s Copilot with the click of a button. You can adjust all these AI features in addition to the usual fan controls and thermal modes through Lenovo Vantage.

Talking of which, the brand talks about a new ‘Legion Coldfront: Hyper’ thermal technology that unlocks even more power while keeping temperatures and noise lower. Lenovo says that the keyboard stays comfortable even under heavy processor loads with TDP reaching 190W. Hefty claims for such small products.

Regarding pricing, the new lineup is expected to debut at:

  • €4,299 for the Lenovo Legion 9i starting February 2024.
  • €1,999 for the Lenovo Legion 7i starting February 2024.
